冷油器主要由上、下水室亦或前、后水室，壳体及管系构成。低温冷却水在换热管内流动，高温润滑油在冷却换热管外随导流隔板以S形流动，以此增大冷热交换过程，提高冷却效果。通过调节冷却水的流量，可精确控制润滑油的温度。
汽轮机油冷却器结构形式以安装形式分为立式和卧式两大类，以内部常用隔板结构分为弓形和圆环盘形。扩展按冷却换热管分为光管式和强化传热管式两种，且以适合用户和运行场景的需求，冷却管材质分为T2铜管、HSN70-1合金铜管与HAI77-2合金铜管和TP304、TP316L、TP317L不锈钢管及TA1、TA2钛管供选择。
